Bergingspoging mislukt

Salvage attempt failed

While the Seahouses Lifeboat was still standing by the
tug "Hemiksem" has come down from the Forth. An attempt to pull
the "Danio" off with the high tide of 4,6 m at 5.28 p.m. failed,
and the tug has moved towards the shore and stopped in the lee
of Holy Island.

The "Danio" had run onto the rocks with a speed of about 10 knots.
She hit first further inland then pulled back, turned to port and tried to get through the gap between the islands. As there was not enough water she tried to turn around to get out but did not make it.

It was feared that due to the location of the grounding site and regarding the expected tides the ship may remain stuck for another fortnight if salvage teams fail to refloat the ship on high tide on Mar 18. Lower tides over the next two weeks would hamper any attempt to remove the vessel. Storms were due to hit the area next week, so the skipper has filled the ballast tanks with sea water to make the vessel more stable.

Update

Worsening weather complicating salvage

The attempt to pull the "Danio" off on Mar 18 could be threatened because of bad weather conditions. The vessel remained caught on rocks on the Farne Islands about 3 miles from the mainland. The ship was sitting quite safe and was high and dry at low water.

There were about 27 tonnes of diesel oil on board, but there were no real concerns about pollution. The ship could, however, remain stranded for two weeks due to tide patterns if it was not pulled off on Mar 18. Weather conditions on scene were worsening. A second tug, additional salvage equipment and possibly a helicopter were brought in to assist the tug "Hemiksem" which has been on standby at Seahouses since Mar 16 to pull the vessel off the rocks. Salvage experts were also considering bringing in a commercial helicopter to land equipment such as a portable generator and pumps on the vessel to aid the recovery operation.

The plan to move the vessel at high tide around 5-6 p.m. was provisionally agreed in the afternoon of Mar 17 following a meeting between the salvage company Titan, the Coastguard’s counter-pollution unit, the National Trust, which looks after the islands, and a Department for Transport representative. The vessel was stuck near the Longstone Lighthouse, close to where heroine Grace Darling and her lighthouse keeper father carried out the famous rescue from the steamship Forfarshire in 1838.

The Farnes Islands are internationally known for the thousands of puffins which live there, as well as 6,000 grey seals and more than 20 bird species that breed there.
