Container ship sank - two missing
The "Meratus Banjar 2" enroute from Surabaya to Makassar with a cargo of containers, sank on Sep 2, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Masalembo waters the Java Sea in pos. 06 13S 114 13E about 100 miles NE of Surabaya in a water depth of 82 meters.
The vessel had reported water ingress in the engine room at 10 p.m. on Sep 1, and the crew had been unable to get the water ingress under control, and the ship developed and increasing list to port before sinking stern first.
Two of the crew of 20 were missing, possibly having been trapped in the engine room, and an SAR operation was under way, ccordinated by the KPLP Tanjung Perak which sent the "Meratus Spirit I", "Rimau Island" and "Owa".
Their divers, however, could only descend to a water depth of 40 meters.
