On Feb 1, 2017, at 11.45 a.m., the CROSS Gris-Nez was notified of the difficulties
of the "Patron"
The total engine blackout occurred in the uplink of the Traffic Separation Scheme (DST)
of Pas-de-Calais, west of Boulogne-sur-Mer
The ship was underway from Taranto to Antwerp with a cargo of steel and went adrift
in the particularly frequented area
The crew tried to carry out repairs as quickly as possible
Meanwhile, in order to ensure safe navigation,
the CROSS diverted maritime traffic from the ship's position
As a preventive measure, the tug "Abeille Languedoc",
stationed in Boulogne-sur-Mer, was pre-alerted
In the early afternoon, the "Patron" was still in trouble
The "Abeille Languedoc" positioned itself to intervene if the situation did not improve
Around 6 p.m. the crew identified the damage and started repairs
But despite an attempt to restart, the ship did not regain its propulsion
and had to accept a towing contract
The Maritime Prefecture asked the master to head for a French port,
given the deterioration in weather conditions
Towing started shortly after 3 p.m., and the convoy arrived at the anchorage area
of Dyck off Dunkirk in the morning of Feb 2
The ship was then taken over by two port tugs and berthed at jetty 3 at 2.30 p.m.
