In aanvaring met sleepboot

Sirrah ran into tug

Following an engine failure, the Sirrah on Apr 18, 2012,
at 8 p.m. ran into the tug "Vorwärts" when leaving the Great North Lock Brunsbüttel for eastbound transit of the Kiel Canal.

In the inner harbor of Brundbüttel the amount main engine suddenly failed and the ship drifted towards the southern bank of the canal awith a speed of 1.5 knots finally hitting the moored tug despite and emergency anchoraging manoever. The bulbous bow of the freighter dented the hull of the tug about 50 centimeters deep, so that an auxiliary diesel engine was torn from its foundation and several pipes broke.

After the collision the Sirrah was kept on site by tugs which were by chance on scene. The cause for the failure was a defect in the lubricating oil system. After replacing the lubricating oil filter, the machine could be restarted and the container ship moved to the railway station pilings in Brunsbüttel, where officials of the police station Brunsbüttel boarded the ship for an accident investigation.
