Collision in the Kiel Canal

The Antigua-flagged cargo m/v "Herm Kiepe" bound from Helsinki
to Hamburg was in collision with the "Empire" in the canal port of
Brunsbüttel off the locks on Mar 2, 2013, short past noon.
Three containers fell overboard.

The Kiel Canal had to be closed between Kudensee and Brunsbüttel
for larger vessels. Only small vessels were allowed to pass, but no ships with a draught of more than 5 metres. More than a dozen ships anchored in waiting position off the canal. One of the three containers has been located and was towed to shore in Brunsbuettel.

The accident happened when the "Empire" which was entering the canal ran into the "Herm Kiepe" which was waiting to enter the locks westbound in the Kiel Canal. One container fell onto the bow of the "Herm Kiepe". The search for two containers went on frantically. The Water and Shipping Authority Brunsbüttel called the sounding ship "Orka" whioch has modern sonar technology to detect objects on the bottom of the canal. The crew of the vessel has yet to be gathered, since the ship is not operable around the clock and should, according to the district Headquarters of the canal, start the search in the afternoon.

The "Empire" berthed in the oil port in Brunsbüttel after the collision for investigations, the "Herm Kiepe" entered the the lock and was being investigated by the water Police there. It was to continue the voyage to Hamburg in the afternoon to Hamburg where the container on the bow was to be recovered. The "Empire" was bound from CTA Hamburg for Gdynia.

Update

in Brunsbüttel from debris from damaged containers which had gone adrift.
