Tug grounded off Crete
The 'Viking' while towing a dredger from Sfax to Palma de Mallorca was caught in rough weather south of Crete and tried to shelter in Crete waters on Dec 7
The tug anchored off Matala in southern Crete but was both ships were pushed on the rocky coast between Kommos and Matala around 6 a.m.
The eight crew members were rescued by port staff and two EMAK vehicles with nine people as well as assistance of another tug in difficult weather conditions with stormy northern winds
Some had suffered hypothermia and traumatic injuries and were taken to the University Hospital in Heraklion
Helicopter assistance has also been requested
The tug with 20 tons of fuel on board was holed within a short time and sank on the spot
