Mare abandoned off Crete
Greek authorities have successfully airlifted all six crewmembers of the "Mare", among them three Turks, two Azeris and a Georgian, off the vessel, which had been enroute from Lanarka to Bizerte carrying
800 tons of bulk cargo and 400 tons General cargo, after she ran into severe trouble in a gale near Kolymvari just off the southern island of Crete on Jan 13, 2015.
A Super Puma Navy helicopter hoisted the crew in the late afternoon and took them to Chania when the ship was anchored in 9-10 Bf winds
0,5 miles off Kolimbari at the northwestern coast of Crete.
The Turkish master initially requested to abandon the ship in the morning, but later told Greek authorities he had the situation under control which changed again at 3 p.m.
Three tugs were heading for the abandoned ship.
